Welcome To Speech and Language!
Speech and Language
Speech is the spoken medium of language. The other two forms of language are writing and gestures. Gestures range from simple imitative movements, like pretending to drink, to much more complex finger-spelling and sign systems of communication.
The link at the bottom of this page entitled: "Children's Speech Sound Disorders" , Caroline Bowen Phd, CPSP, will connect you to this and other valuable information.
Receptive and Expressive Language :
Receptive language refers to the understanding what is said, written or signed.
Expressive language is communication through the form of speaking, writing or signing. Language acquisition of all children occurs gradually through interaction with people and their environment.
Please see the link for Receptive and Expressive Language Development at the bottom of this page for more information.
Stuttering Information
The Stuttering Foundation provides free online resources, services and support to those who stutter and their families, as well as support for research into the causes of stuttering. I have attached the link below.
Using Predictable Books with Young Children
When we make predictions, we form ideas about the future based on what we already know or believe. A predictable book is one that features patterns, sequences, and connections in the illustrations or words that enable children to guess "what comes next" in the story. Predictable books can be used to help 2-, 3-, and 4-year-olds learn what to expect from spoken and written language (see Illinois Early Learning Standards Benchmark 1.B.ECa).
This is taken from the Illinois Early Learning web site. Please see the link below for more information, related links and helpful sources such as book lists.
